Cemetery vandalism and theft in Argentina

Overview

Multiple cemeteries across Argentina have been targeted by vandals and thieves. In Yapeyú, Corrientes, authorities reported that nine pantheons were damaged during a nighttime attack, involving the breaking of doors, glass, and locks, which resulted in some coffins being moved and bodies left exposed.

Similar incidents of desecration and theft have been reported in the San Juan province, specifically in Jáchal and Rodeo. Victims reported broken niches, torn bronze doors, destroyed glass, and the theft of commemorative plaques and flower vases. Local residents are calling for increased security, night patrols, and improved surveillance to protect these memorial sites.
