Criminal sentences handed down for sexual assaults against minors in Malaysia and Singapore

In separate legal proceedings in Malaysia and Singapore, men have been sentenced for sexual offenses against minors.

A Sessions Court judge in Malaysia sentenced 22-year-old Daniel Arrazy Salmi Abdullah and 20-year-old Indonesian national Irvan to 10 years in prison and six strokes of the cane each. The two men were convicted of raping a 16-year-old girl in two unconnected incidents. Daniel was involved in an assault in Simunjan in May, while Irvan assaulted the victim in a Serian workers’ dormitory in August. Both men pleaded guilty under the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.

In Singapore, 63-year-old chef Kassim Juhamat was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison for the sexual assault of an 11-year-old girl. The incident occurred in June at a restaurant where the victim was visiting a relative. Kassim pleaded guilty to sexual assault by penetration, with additional charges of molestation and committing an obscene act taken into consideration. Due to his age, the court substituted caning with six months of additional jail time.
