Legal sentencing for sexual offenses against minors
Overview
In Malaysia and Singapore, legal proceedings have concluded with prison sentences for men convicted of sexual offenses against minors.
In Malaysia, a Sessions Court sentenced 22-year-old Daniel Arrazy Salmi Abdullah and 20-year-old Indonesian national Irvan to 10 years in prison and six strokes of the cane each. The men were convicted of raping a 16-year-old girl in two separate incidents occurring in May and August. Both defendants pleaded guilty under the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.
In Singapore, 63-year-old chef Kassim Juhamat received an eight-and-a-half-year prison sentence for the sexual assault of an 11-year-old girl in June. Kassim pleaded guilty to sexual assault by penetration, with additional charges of molestation and committing an obscene act taken into consideration. Due to his age, the court substituted caning with six months of additional jail time.
