Cristina Fernández de Kirchner remains under house arrest
Former Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner continues to serve a six-year prison sentence under house arrest at her residence in Buenos Aires. The sentence, finalized by the Supreme Court on June 10, 2025, stems from the “Vialidad” case involving fraudulent administration related to public works in Santa Cruz.
In addition to the prison term, the ruling imposes a perpetual disqualification from holding public office. While the Federal Oral Court No. 2 decided on September 21, 2026, to maintain her house arrest status following compliance reports, her legal team continues to seek reviews of the conviction. Defense lawyers have recently submitted documentation they claim contradicts aspects of the prosecution, citing information from the “Cuadernos” case regarding the distribution of public works funds.
Despite the legal restrictions and the loss of her political party affiliation, Fernández de Kirchner remains a figure of influence in Argentine public life.
