Cristina Kirchner marks one year of house arrest under tight restrictions in Buenos Aires

Former Argentine president Cristina Fernández Kirchner has completed a year of prison‑house arrest in a Buenos Aires condominium. Convicted of corruption, she serves a six‑year sentence with permanent political disqualification. Her confinement includes an electronic ankle bracelet, a daily two‑hour balcony allowance, and a limit of two weekly visits by three people for no more than two hours. Supporters gather on the street below, holding signs that read “Cristina, viva y libre te queremos,” and take turns monitoring the area to deter any disturbances.

Kirchner has left her apartment only for an urgent appendicitis operation in December 2025 and a medical check‑up. She declined to visit her son after his surgery to avoid media attention. Senator Anabel Fernández Sagasti criticised the regime, saying, “She has the worst conditions of house arrest in the country, even compared with narcotrafficants and genocides.” The case, known as the Vialidad cause, alleges she irregularly awarded public works to businessman Lázaro Báez in Santa Cruz, though the ruling cites only circumstantial evidence. The situation continues to fuel political mobilisation among Peronist supporters.
