Cristina Kirchner petitions UN to lift ban, aim for 2027 Argentine primary

Former Argentine president Cristina Kirchner filed an individual communication with the United Nations Human Rights Committee seeking a precautionary measure to suspend the perpetual disqualification imposed on her in the Vialidad case, which bars her from holding public office.

The request, prepared by lawyers Javier Borrego (former judge of the European Court of Human Rights), Rafael Valim (who represented Brazil’s President Lula da Silva before international bodies) and Carlos Beraldi, argues that the disqualification violates the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and points to alleged irregularities in the Vialidad trial, such as judge bias, limited expert testimony and late‑introduced evidence. If the Committee grants a favorable measure, the matter would be referred to Argentina’s Court of Cassation and then the Supreme Court for possible overturning of the ban, potentially allowing Kirchner to run in the 2027 primary elections.
