Croatia advises on dangerous wildlife and pet insect bite safety

Authorities in Croatia have issued guidance on how to handle encounters with the country's most hazardous animals. Recommended actions include staying calm, keeping distance, allowing the animal to retreat, and calling emergency services (112) if health is at risk. Specific species highlighted are poisonous snakes such as the adder (poskok) and the viper (riđovka), brown bears, wild boar, black‑widow spiders, ticks, and certain poisonous sea fish. For snakes, victims should immobilise the bitten limb, avoid cutting or sucking the wound, and seek medical attention immediately.

Pet owners are also warned about insect bites on dogs and cats, which can lead to infections, allergic reactions, or severe skin lesions. Owners should clean the bite with mild soap and water, apply a cold compress, and monitor for swelling or excessive itching. Over‑the‑counter soothing creams or antihistamines may be used only after veterinary consultation. Preventive measures include minimizing pet exposure to mosquitoes, fleas and ticks, which are attracted by body heat and carbon dioxide.
