Slaven Bilić appointed Croatia head coach after Dalic resignation
The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) has appointed former defender Slaven Bilić as the new head coach of the Croatia men’s national team. The decision, proposed by HNS president Marijan Kustić and approved unanimously by the federation’s board, follows the resignation of Zlatko Dalic after Croatia’s 2‑1 loss to Portugal in the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup.
Bilić, 57, previously led Croatia from 2006 to 2012, overseeing 65 matches with 42 wins, 15 draws and eight defeats, and guiding the side to the Euro 2008 quarter‑finals. As a player he earned 44 caps and featured in the 1998 World Cup semi‑final. Since his first spell he has coached clubs including West Ham United, West Bromwich Albion, Watford and Saudi Arabia’s Al‑Fateh.
In his introductory statement Bilić said, “I have full confidence in our players, and it is my responsibility to bring energy, ambition and determination so Croatia remains among football’s elite.” He added that he returns “as a more mature and experienced coach than in 2006, but with the same motivation and desire to see Croatia stay powerful, bold and successful.”
