Croatia football: Bilić era, Dalić exit, VAR dispute
Entities: Saudi Arabian Football Federation · South Korean Football Association · Igor Bišćan · Korea Football Association · Zlatko Dalić
Overview
Zlatko Dalić formally resigned in early July 2026, ending a nine‑year spell that yielded three international medals, including the 2023 World Cup silver. His departure was marked by a public reception in Zagreb attended by half a million supporters, where critics highlighted that promised stadium projects in Zagreb, Split and Rijeka remained unrealised; the only new venue opened under his tenure was the Opus Arena in Osijek.
Slaven Bilić was confirmed as Dalić’s successor on 23 July, signing a four‑year contract worth roughly €1 million per year and bringing Danilo Butorović, Dean Računica, Vatroslav Mihačić and Vedran Ćorluka onto his staff. Bilić will lead Croatia into the Euro 2028 qualifier against the Czech Republic on 26 September.
The Croatian federation lodged a formal complaint to FIFA over the disallowed Josko Gvardiol goal and three other VAR decisions in the 2‑1 World Cup round‑of‑32 loss to Portugal, demanding full Connected Ball Technology footage.
Domestically, Dinamo Zagreb continued its market activity, signing Slovenian striker Aleks Stojaković for €750 000 and pursuing other moves, while Hajduk Split targeted Emmanuel Ekong on loan. Goalkeeper Ivan Nevistić attracted interest from Turkey and Poland, and Dominik Livaković’s post‑World Cup injury kept him out for two to three weeks, with his future at Fenerbahçe still under review.
In late July, reports emerged that Dalić is being courted by the United Arab Emirates football federation with a package reportedly worth around €5 million per year. The offer appears to include most of his current Croatian coaching staff, and discussions also involve interest from Saudi Arabia and South Korea, though no contract has been signed yet.
Negotiations continue for a historic friendly in Australia in January 2027 and the possible recall of striker Marko Livaja.
