Croatia commemorates Holocaust victims with new memorials and ceremony

In Osijek, seven new stone memorial plaques were installed to honor Jewish residents murdered during World War II. The plaques mark the former homes of the Herrmann family on Iva Tijardović Street and the sites where Alexander Auferber and Aleksa Salom were killed in King Peter Krešimir IV Park. The initiative, run by the Centre for Promotion of Tolerance and Holocaust Remembrance, aims to preserve the names of those victims.

On the 85th anniversary of the establishment of the Jadovno‑Gospić‑Pag complex, the first Ustasha death camp in the NDH, a commemorative event was held near the Golgotha monument on Velebit. Representatives of victim families, Serbian and Jewish community leaders, and former Serbian President Boris Tadić attended. Speakers condemned any use of the Ustasha salute “Za dom spremni” and emphasized the need to remember the multi‑ethnic victims—including Serbs, Jews and Croatian anti‑fascists—who perished in the camps.
