Croatia enacts control zones for African swine fever and small‑ruminant plague outbreaks

The Croatian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management issued a resolution defining protection, monitoring and infected zones for African swine fever after outbreaks on pig farms in the villages of Šaptinovci (Đurđenovac municipality) on 10 June 2026, Kućanci (Magadenovac municipality) on 11 June 2026, and in wild boar at the X/117 hunting ground in Virovitica‑Podravska County. The resolution lists the specific settlements included in each zone for Osijek‑Baranja and Virovitica‑Podravska counties.

Separately, the Croatian Veterinary Institute confirmed the presence of the small‑ruminant plague (KMP) virus in sheep from two farms in Markovac, Daruvar, Bjelovar‑Bilogora County. KMP is a category‑A disease requiring urgent control measures. It was first detected in Croatia on 13 December 2025 and has since caused several outbreaks in the Dalmatian, Zadar and Šibenik‑Knin regions. Control actions have been enforced, and related restriction zones were lifted on 4 March 2026.
