Croatia faces water contamination and drought-driven shortages
Croatia is facing significant water challenges involving both contamination and scarcity. In the Zagreb area, health officials have warned that water from a natural spring in Talani on Medvednica is unsafe for drinking. Laboratory analysis revealed the presence of coliform bacteria and intestinal enterococci, though Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were not detected in measurable amounts. The Dr. Andrija Štampar Teaching Institute of Public Health noted that because this spring is not part of the public water supply system, it is not subject to continuous disinfection or monitoring.
Simultaneously, a prolonged drought has caused a severe water shortage in the Vrgorac region. The Banja underground source has nearly dried up, leaving approximately one thousand residents in surrounding settlements without access to water. In response, the Croatian Army and firefighters have deployed water tankers and fixed tanks to provide drinking water to affected communities.
