Severe environmental and water supply crises have emerged across Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo, driven by a combination of extreme weather and infrastructure deficiencies.

Initial reports highlighted a drought and heatwave causing water emergencies in Serbia, specifically in the Trgovište municipality, where drinking and technical water supplies were restricted. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, rising river temperatures and low water levels in the Bosna, Usora, and Spreča rivers threatened ecosystems, leading to reported fish die-offs.

As the situation progressed, the focus expanded to include systemic pollution and infrastructure failures. In Kosovo, the Pećka Bistrica river has suffered from severe pollution due to a lack of sewage networks, with a Ministry of Environment report noting that approximately 90% of wastewater is discharged into watercourses without treatment. Concurrently, in Sarajevo, water supply suspensions were implemented in the Rakovica neighborhood because demand significantly exceeded the maximum pumping capacity, necessitating urgent conservation efforts.
