Croatia faces wildfires and water quality inquiries for tourists

Croatia is facing significant challenges for the summer tourism season due to widespread wildfires. Since the beginning of the year, approximately 10,000 hectares have burned, marking a 75% increase compared to the previous year. These fires, driven by drought, heat, and strong winds, have affected areas including Omiš, Korčula, Dugi otok, Pelješac, and Zadar. The situation has led to evacuations of over 2,000 people.

For travelers, the fires raise questions regarding travel insurance and cancellations. Coverage varies by provider; some companies include natural disasters as valid reasons for cancellation, while others, such as AXA Assistance, may include exclusions for adverse climatic or ecological situations. Fear of fire alone may not be sufficient to trigger insurance claims.

Separately, regarding travel logistics, tap water in Croatia is reported to be of high quality and safe for consumption. According to the Croatian Public Health Institute, water from public networks meets strict European Union hygiene standards and is subject to constant monitoring. Most mainland resorts from Istria to southern Dalmatia offer safe tap water, potentially saving tourists the expense of purchasing bottled water.
