Croatia launches first hybrid electro-diesel train between Split and Zagreb
Croatia has launched its first hybrid electro-diesel train, connecting the cities of Split and Zagreb. The new service, which began on September 15, 2026, is designed to navigate both electrified and non-electrified sections of the rail network, utilizing electric power where available and diesel propulsion on other segments.
Developed by the KONČAR Group in collaboration with various Croatian companies, the train features 150 seats, free Wi-Fi, power sockets, and accessibility ramps. It also includes amenities such as self-service machines for snacks and beverages. This initiative is part of a broader modernization of the HŽ Passenger Transport fleet aimed at reducing energy consumption, noise, and greenhouse gas emissions.
The procurement of six such electro-diesel trains is being financed by a 57.3 million euro loan from the European Investment Bank, with all units expected to be in service by the end of 2026. Following a new timetable implementation in December 2026, the frequency of service between Zagreb and Split is expected to increase to four daily trains.
