Railway modernization in Croatia

Overview

Croatia has implemented new rail transport technologies through various regional and national initiatives. In the Mura–Drava region, the LAG Mura – Drava Local Action Group introduced an electric tourist train valued at 130,000 euros. This vehicle, manufactured by Končar Termotehnika, is part of the ‘Zlatarske avanture’ cross-border project funded by the Interreg Slovenia – Croatia program.

On a national level, Croatia launched its first hybrid electro-diesel train service connecting Split and Zagreb. Developed by the KONČAR Group, these trains are designed to operate on both electrified and non-electrified rail segments. This rollout is part of a broader modernization of the HŽ Passenger Transport fleet, supported by a 57.3 million euro loan from the European Investment Bank, with the goal of reducing energy consumption and emissions.
