Croatia Ministry warns of spreading grapevine flavescence dorée disease

The Croatian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has issued an urgent warning to all grapevine owners, including professional producers and hobbyists, regarding the spread of grapevine flavescence dorée. This disease is considered one of the most dangerous for vineyards because infected vines cannot recover.

To prevent further spread, the Ministry has mandated specific phytosanitary measures. These include the timely identification and destruction of infected vines along with their roots, monitoring and controlling the American grapevine moth—the primary disease vector—and clearing abandoned or neglected vineyards. Additionally, owners are advised to remove bindweed, which can host the moth, and to use only certified, healthy planting material.

Symptoms typically appear in June and become most visible during the autumn. For white varieties, leaves may show irregular yellowing and curling; red varieties may exhibit premature reddening. Infected clusters may dry up or wither without maturing. The Ministry urges anyone finding suspected infections or abandoned vineyards to report them immediately to the State Inspectorate, the Croatian Agency for Agriculture and Food, or the Ministry.
