Croatia Ministry warns of spreading grapevine disease
Overview
The Croatian wine industry continues to face significant challenges due to the spread of flavescence dorée, an incurable disease transmitted by the American grapevine leafhopper. Since 2017, the nation has lost 22.3% of its total vineyard area, with severe impacts noted in northern regions like Hrvatsko Zagorje.
In response to the ongoing threat, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has issued an urgent warning to both professional producers and hobbyists. The Ministry has mandated specific phytosanitary measures to prevent further transmission, including the timely identification and destruction of infected vines and their roots. To control the disease vector, owners are instructed to monitor the American grapevine moth and clear abandoned or neglected vineyards. Additionally, the removal of bindweed—which can host the moth—and the use of only certified, healthy planting material are recommended.
Symptoms typically emerge in June and become most visible during autumn. White varieties may show irregular yellowing and curling, while red varieties may exhibit premature reddening. Infected clusters often dry up or wither without maturing. The Ministry urges the immediate reporting of suspected infections or abandoned vineyards to the State Inspectorate, the Croatian Agency for Agriculture and Food, or the Ministry.
