Croatia moves ahead with geothermal power projects, targeting six new electricity plants

The Croatian Ministry of Economy reports that geothermal research is underway at 23 sites and exploitation is active on 13 fields. Six of those fields are slated for electricity generation and seven for district‑heating and agricultural use.

The most advanced electricity projects are being developed by ENNA Group at the Slatina 2 field and by Turkish firm Soyak at the Legrad 1 field. The ministry has drafted a resolution allowing Soyak‑owned Terra Energy Generation Company to drill a new 4‑km‑deep well (LEGRAD GT‑4) that would support a planned 98‑MW geothermal power plant in Legrad. Local officials, including Legrad mayor Ivan Sabolić, say the investor is preparing documentation for a location permit. Both projects have completed the key research phase and are moving toward construction. Additional geothermal potential has been confirmed in Velika Gorica, Osijek, Vinkovci and Zaprešić for district‑heating systems, with several municipalities also pursuing local projects.
