Croatia energy diversification initiatives

In early August 2026, Croatia announced concrete steps to expand its renewable energy capacity through geothermal projects. The Ministry of Economy reported research at 23 sites, with six slated for electricity generation and seven for district‑heating and agricultural use. Advanced projects at the Slatina 2 field (ENNA Group) and the Legrad 1 field (Turkish firm Soyak) moved from research to construction planning, including a proposed 98‑MW plant at Legrad.

A few days later, the government outlined a broader shift toward energy security, adding nuclear power and extensive grid modernization to its agenda. Croatia aims to develop civil nuclear capacity, upgrade high‑voltage transmission, and digitalise grid management, with a 15‑year, €200 million investment plan supported partly by EU funds. Czech firms are being considered for nuclear and automation equipment, reflecting a push to diversify supply sources and meet rising electricity demand from tourism.
