Croatia plans to introduce life imprisonment for serious crimes

The Croatian government is moving to amend the Criminal Code to introduce life imprisonment for the most serious crimes. This legislative shift follows the high-profile murder of 19-year-old Luka Milovac in Drniš, committed by recidivist Kristijan Aleksić.

Minister of Justice, Administration, and Digital Transformation Damir Habijan has announced the formation of a working group to oversee these legal changes. Beyond violent crimes, the proposed amendments may also include life sentences for extreme cases of ecocide.

In response to these developments, Slaven Čolak, Chairman of the Fantasyland Group, has criticized the focus of the proposed sanctions. While supporting harsher penalties for environmental destruction, Čolak argued that the state should also consider life imprisonment for severe corruption, abuse of power, and official misconduct that results in massive financial damage to the state or public interest.
