Metrology Institute proposes stricter speed camera tolerance rules
The State Institute of Metrology (DZM) has proposed new regulations to reduce the safety margin—the speed tolerance subtracted from measured speeds—used by speed cameras and other traffic enforcement devices. The proposal, currently undergoing public consultation until October 19, aims to reflect technological advancements that have made speed measurement devices significantly more precise.
Under the current rules, a 10 km/h margin is typically subtracted for speeds between 51 and 100 km/h. The new proposal would reduce this to just 5 km/h for stationary measurements. This change means that drivers previously exempt from fines due to the tolerance margin could face penalties, and in some cases, be moved into higher, more expensive fine categories.
The new regulations would also differentiate between stationary cameras, mobile devices, and police interceptors. The proposal is being discussed in the context of regional traffic safety and technological precision, with implications for drivers in Croatia and neighboring regions, including Bosnia and Herzegovina.
