Croatia speed camera tolerance regulation proposal
Overview
The State Institute of Metrology (DZM) has proposed new regulations to reduce the safety margin—the speed tolerance subtracted from measured speeds—used by speed cameras and other traffic enforcement devices. The proposal aims to reflect technological advancements that have made measurement devices more precise.
Under current rules, a 10 km/h margin is typically subtracted for speeds between 51 and 100 km/h. The new proposal would reduce this to 5 km/h for stationary measurements. This change could result in drivers facing penalties or higher fine categories that were previously avoided due to the tolerance margin.
Data from the Ministry of the Interior indicates that fixed speed cameras are responsible for a majority of speeding violations, accounting for 62 percent of offenses last year and 64 percent in the first eight months of the current year. Croatia currently utilizes 206 fixed cameras across 807 locations. The proposal is undergoing public consultation until October 19.
