Croatia road safety: Fatal accidents and strict traffic penalties

A series of fatal and high-frequency traffic incidents in Croatia has renewed focus on road safety and the severity of traffic penalties. In Lazi Bistrički, 33-year-old Matija Gereci, a member of the Volunteer Fire Department Laz and the Croatian Automobile and Karting Federation (HAKS), died after his motorcycle lost control and struck an object. Police determined he had not adjusted his speed to the road conditions.

In Zagreb, a weekend police operation identified 897 traffic violations, including 405 speeding offenses and 121 cases of driving under the influence. One driver was recorded with a blood alcohol level of 2.21 per mille.

Following a fatal accident in Botinec involving a driver without a license and an unregistered vehicle, authorities highlighted the strict legal consequences for traffic violations. Driving without ever having passed a driving test can result in fines up to 2,650 euros or up to 60 days in prison. Additionally, losing a license due to accumulated penalty points requires offenders to restart the entire licensing process from scratch, including medical exams and driving school, which can cost over 1,000 euros.
