Croatia tightens traffic fines after Botinec crash

In late July 2026, a Czech tourist was fined more than 48,000 CZK and banned for three months after being caught at 245 km/h on the A1 motorway. A month later, a 23-year-old driver in Zagreb received a €980 fine and a one-month license suspension for a 1.46 g/kg blood-alcohol DUI.

The fatal crash on 7 August 2026 in Zagreb’s Botinec suburb, caused by an unlicensed driver with an expired registration, killed three people and prompted a comprehensive review of traffic-offense penalties. New regulations set fines of €30 for driving without a license, €130 for an expired license, and €390 for using an incorrect license class. Serious breaches, such as unlicensed or intoxicated driving, can result in fines between €1,320 and €2,650 or up to 60 days of imprisonment. Speeding penalties range from €30 to €2,650 for exceeding limits by more than 50 km/h in built-up areas. Vehicle owners allowing unqualified drivers to use their cars face fines of €390–€920, and accumulating 9–12 penalty points triggers a two-year license suspension and a requirement to retake the full licensing process.

In a separate incident in Lazi Bistrički, 33-year-old Matija Gereci, a member of the Volunteer Fire Department Laz and the Croatian Automobile and Karting Federation, died after his motorcycle lost control; police determined he had failed to adjust his speed to road conditions. Amidst these events, a weekend police operation in Zagreb identified 897 violations, including 405 speeding offenses and 121 DUI cases, with one driver recorded at a 2.21 per mille blood alcohol level.
