Croatia to switch from HZZO smart cards to new health worker IDs for CEZIH

From 1 July, access to Croatia’s Central Health Information System (CEZIH) will no longer be possible with the existing HZZO smart cards. The health insurer HZZO announced that all health institutions and workers have been informed that the cards will cease to be valid after 30 June 2026 and will be replaced by a new authorised health‑worker identification card.

The new card serves as an official document confirming the holder’s status and provides a secure electronic identifier. It contains qualified certificates that enable legally valid electronic signatures, time‑stamped signatures and remote certificate access for signing medical documents and other transactions. HZZO says the switch to a unified identification and e‑signing system will improve security, reliability and efficiency of digital processes in the health sector, and simplify work for health professionals.
