Croatian suspect detained after Čakovci shooting and large drug seizure

On the night of 4 July, a 42‑year‑old Croatian man opened fire from a pistol at a parking lot of a restaurant in Čakovci, aiming at a 22‑year‑old and a 28‑year‑old. The 22‑year‑old was seriously injured, the 28‑year‑old sustained lighter wounds, and two by‑standers (a 23‑year‑old woman and a 26‑year‑old man) were placed in danger.

Authorities suspect the shooter of two attempted murders, endangering lives and property, and of illicit drug production and trafficking. A search of his home and vehicle yielded more than one kilogram of marijuana, about 5–6 g of synthetic cannabinoid, and roughly 10 g of cocaine, as well as ammunition for a 7.9 mm firearm.

The Varaždin County Court ordered investigative detention, citing the risk of repeat offenses and potential interference with witnesses. The County Prosecutor's Office announced it will file additional charges as the investigation proceeds.
