Croatian defender Marin Pongračić emphasizes collective defence ahead of US clash

Marin Pongračić, the 28‑year‑old centre‑back of the Croatian national team, told reporters in Alexandria that the team’s defence must be a collective effort, not just the work of the back line. He highlighted the importance of staying compact and analysing opponents, naming England’s striker Harry Kane as a major threat, calling him “perhaps the best striker in the world” after his performances for Bayern Munich.

Pongračić also described the squad’s preparation for the upcoming match in the United States, noting that they arrived in Dallas eight days before the game and will travel there two days earlier than the rest of the squad to allow extra time for acclimatisation and recovery. He stressed that the players do not feel the “burden” of recent Olympic success and that the fans’ expectations will be met by staying humble, focusing on each game and continuing professional habits such as better sleep and nutrition.

He reiterated his lifelong allegiance to Croatia despite being born and raised in Germany, stating that his heart has always beaten for the Croatian national team.
