Croatian films ‘Svadba’ and ‘Lijepa večer, lijep dan’ gain international acclaim

The romantic comedy “Svadba”, directed by Igor Šeregija, was named among the 25 highest‑rated films of the year on Letterboxd. The co‑production with Serbia became the most‑watched Croatian film ever, attracting over 800,000 viewers domestically, about two million across the former Yugoslav region and 2.25 million globally, and earning roughly €12 million on a €0.9 million budget. A sequel is slated for release in 2028.

Meanwhile, “Lijepa večer, lijep dan”, directed by Ivona Juka, opened in Croatian cinemas on 21 May after a festival run that earned 40 awards, including nine audience prizes, and a nomination for the Oscar. The historical drama, set in 1950s Yugoslavia, was produced with partners in Canada, Poland, Cyprus and Bosnia‑and‑Herzegovina on a €3.5 million budget financed through a loan. It features an ensemble of regional actors and tackles themes of personal freedom and ideological repression.
