2026 Balkan film season expands with festivals and open‑air

Entities: Sisak · Hugh Grant · Keltska utopija · Zadar · Heretik

Overview

The summer 2026 Balkan film circuit continued to broaden. Earlier July highlights included Serbia’s Slaughter Art Festival in Doljevac, Bosnia‑Herzegovina’s Avant&Una Grand Prix, and the regional premiere of *3 nedelje posle* in Pula. The Mediterranean‑Balkan “Across the Lake” festival opened in Doјran, while River Cinema’s 16th edition brought free evening screenings to Karlovac County, featuring Lynne Ramsay’s *Umri, ljubavi* and the documentary *DJ Ahmet*.

Cinehill in Fužine awarded the main prize to the Mexican drama *Muhe* and recognised works such as *Držim te*, *L’avant‑poste 21* and *Otapanje*. In Serbia, the 33rd Palić European Film Festival presented the Palić Tower directing award to *Ah, ta praznina, ta strašna praznina* and highlighted *Nesrećna majka*.

New open‑air programmes arrived in Croatia. The Art‑kino “Cineast” series runs in Vodnjan’s Bašta from 9 July to 27 August, showing recent award‑winning auteur films including Sorrentino’s *La grazia* and Panahi’s *Jedan običan incident*. An outdoor film picnic in Rijeka on 28 August will screen Billy Wilder’s classic *Some Like It Hot*.

Student documentary, short‑film and family‑friendly screenings continued in Temska, Postira, Sinj and Romania, maintaining the season’s diverse and accessible outlook.
