Slaven Bilić Appointed New Head Coach of Croatia National Football Team

The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) announced on 13 July 2026 that former international Slaven Bilić will replace Zlatko Dalić as head coach of the senior men’s national team. Bilić, 57, previously led Croatia from 2006‑2012, achieving 42 wins, 15 draws and eight defeats, including a Euro 2008 quarter‑final. His new contract runs until July 2028, covering the next World Cup and Euro 2028 cycles.

The appointment follows Croatia’s elimination in the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup, after a 2‑1 loss to Portugal, which prompted Dalić’s resignation after nine years in charge. HNS president Marijan Kustić highlighted Bilić’s experience and expressed confidence that he is “the right person” for the role. Bilić publicly said he wants Luka Modrić to continue playing for Croatia and confirmed ongoing contact with the veteran midfielder.

Former players and officials, including Darijo Srna, Stipe Pletikaša and journalist Ivan Pudar, discussed the coaching change, Bilić’s previous tenure, and the lack of public detail on the four‑year contract’s financial terms, which have drawn criticism for opacity. Discussions also touched on the potential recall of striker Marko Livaja.
