Croatian Football Federation presses FIFA over disallowed World Cup goal

Croatia was eliminated after a 2‑1 defeat to Portugal in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup in Toronto. A goal by Josko Gvardiol in the 13th minute of extra time was ruled out after the ball’s Connected Ball Technology recorded a touch by Igor Matanović, a decision the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) says lacked clear evidence.

HNS sent a strongly worded letter to FIFA requesting an explanation for the overturned goal, three other disallowed goals in the second half, and a penalty awarded to Portugal following a VAR review that the referee initially did not consider a foul. The letter cites FIFA’s own rule that hair counts as a body part only if it influences the ball’s trajectory and argues that the public video shows no such impact. HNS also demanded the VAR footage to verify the sensor data. FIFA has not responded to the federation’s request.
