Croatian Minister Branko Bačić Announces Plans for 2,800 New Affordable Homes and State Property Strategy

Minister of Construction, Spatial Planning and State Property Branko Bačić told officials in Rijeka that the government aims to provide adequate, affordable housing for protected tenants by 2030. He said Croatia lacks about 236,000 housing units and plans to build and renovate 20,200 homes and family houses over the next four years, allocating roughly €2 billion, with an additional €3.5 billion expected from the 2026‑2034 financial framework.

Bačić also noted that about 2,800 new apartments are currently under construction nationwide. In the parliament he presented a strategy for managing state-owned real estate from 2026 to 2035, emphasizing activation of vacant properties rather than selling assets. The ministry manages roughly 8,000 state housing units, of which 1,500 are vacant, and intends to refurbish 350 units for protected tenants and young families. He stressed that only non‑residential state properties such as garages or attics will be sold, while the majority will be used for affordable housing or administrative needs.
