Croatia's Energy Sector Targets Nuclear Power and Grid Modernisation

Croatia is shifting its energy policy toward greater security and diversification by planning the development of nuclear power for civil use. The country, which has traditionally focused on market liberalisation and renewable sources, now aims to invest in new zero‑emission generation, modernise its transmission network and digitalise grid management.

The transmission system operator HOPS has outlined a 15‑year investment cycle that includes more than €200 million in upgrades funded partly by European Union programmes. Projects involve high‑voltage lines, transformer stations, advanced control systems and measures to protect the grid against climate‑related and cyber threats.

Czech firms with experience in power plant equipment, grid automation and nuclear technology are being highlighted as potential partners, reflecting the view that the Croatian energy market offers promising opportunities for Czech industry. Seasonal tourism demand, especially during hot summers, is driving the need for reliable electricity supply and efficient consumption management.
