Calabria railway upgrades: station revamps and new Sibari‑Taranto train

Over €19 million, financed partly by the PNRR, has been spent to refurbish the Crotone and Sibari railway stations. Work included raising platforms to the European 55 cm standard, installing three new elevators, replacing tactile paths, updating lighting and signage, and restoring historic station façades. The upgrades improve accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility and prepare the stations for future seismic and functional enhancements.

The Regional Council of Calabria also announced the reactivation of the Sibari‑Metaponto‑Taranto line, introducing the “Treno della Magna Grecia” from 13 September. The service will run twice daily, stopping at Rocca Imperiale, Montegiordano, Roseto Capo Spulico, Amendolara, Trebisacce, Villapiana, Metaponto, Scanzano Jonico, Policoro‑Tursi and Nova Siri, and will be linked to regional and high‑speed connections. The programme aims to strengthen passenger mobility, boost freight capacity on the Taranto‑Gioia Tauro corridor and shift transport from road to rail.

Together, the station improvements and the new train service are intended to modernise Calabria’s rail infrastructure, enhance accessibility, and stimulate regional economic activity.
