Crotone Approves €1 Million Flood‑Mitigation Project for Torrente Pignataro

The Crotone municipal council has approved a technical‑economic feasibility project to strengthen the drainage system of the torrente Pignataro and its tributaries. The plan, proposed by Deputy Mayor and Public Works assessor Sandro Cretella, allocates one million euros to build a new sedimentation basin, install inspection wells along the river, and improve the river mouth to enhance water flow to the sea. Additional works include video‑inspection of the underground channel and cleaning of the drainage network to eliminate blockages.

The measures aim to reduce flood risk that affected parts of the city during extreme rain events in 2020, increase the capacity of the urban runoff system, and improve the municipality’s response to intense meteorological phenomena. Contracts will be tendered within weeks, with construction expected to start shortly after the bidding process.
