Crotone security forces target illegal labor and organized crime

Authorities in Crotone have intensified efforts to combat organized crime and illegal labor through new leadership and large-scale enforcement operations. The appointment of Colonels Dario Pini (Carabinieri) and Paolo Benedetto Toma (Guardia di Finanza) has been welcomed by the Cisl Magna Grecia union as a positive step toward protecting workers and preventing 'caporalato' (labor exploitation).

Under the 'Focus ’Ndrangheta' national and transnational plan, an inter-agency operation involving the State Police, Carabinieri, Guardia di Finanza, and local health authorities resulted in approximately 17,000 euros in administrative sanctions. Key findings included the seizure of 770 kilograms of fruit and vegetables from unauthorized street vendors and the seizure of equipment from a body shop operating without proper authorization.

Additionally, in preparation for the strategic 2.3 billion euro modernization of the SS 106 highway between Crotone and Catanzaro, the Fillea Cgil Calabria union has proposed a transparent recruitment model. This includes using a dedicated public email address for CV submissions to prevent criminal interference and labor exploitation during the construction phase, which is expected to employ over 2,500 workers.
