Cruise industry explores electric and hydrogen propulsion
The cruise industry is exploring new sustainable propulsion technologies, with major shipyards and cruise lines unveiling zero-emission and hybrid concepts.
Meyer Werft has introduced a concept for the ‘Vision’, a fully electric cruise ship designed to be powered exclusively by batteries. The proposed 275-meter vessel would accommodate approximately 1,856 passengers and feature a lithium-iron-phosphate battery with a capacity of at least 500 MWh. This setup is intended to cover typical European routes, such as those between Barcelona and Rome. By eliminating conventional engines and exhaust systems, the design could remove the need for large smokestacks, allowing for more interior space and reduced noise and vibration.
Separately, Viking Ocean Cruises is preparing to launch the Viking Libra in November 2026 and the Viking Astrea in June 2027. These ships will utilize hydrogen fuel cells with a capacity of 6.3 megawatts, developed by Fincantieri’s subsidiary, Isotta Fraschini Motori. While the hydrogen system will not power the ships entirely, it is designed to allow for emission-free operations in ports and limited emission-free sailing in sensitive areas. Fincantieri estimates this technology will reduce annual emissions by approximately 20 percent compared to fossil fuel-powered vessels.
