Initial developments focus on the introduction of new energy technologies, including the first DNV-approved solid-state marine battery from Denmark’s EPTechnologies, modular battery systems, and liquid hydrogen storage projects. Companies are also showcasing hybrid propulsion options, such as variable-speed gensets designed for battery-assisted applications.
Implementation of these technologies has progressed to vessel deployment and construction. Baltic Shipping Company has integrated hybrid systems combining large battery packs with hydrofoils into its coastal fleet to reduce fuel consumption. Additionally, new vessel designs are emerging for the offshore wind sector, such as the electric Commissioning Service Operation Vessel being constructed in Spain, which utilizes high-capacity battery storage and methanol-powered auxiliary engines.
Recent advancements in battery technology have led to new commercial applications and modular designs. Lehmann Marine has secured an order for its AQUBE liquid-cooled battery system to power a 48-meter research vessel for the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Scheduled for 2027, this vessel will act as a floating platform to test climate-neutral propulsion, including hydrogen and fully electric setups, in the North and Baltic Seas. The AQUBE system is engineered for high-power performance, capable of discharging full capacity within 30 minutes to assist with maneuvering.
Furthermore, AYK Energy has announced plans to unveil a swappable containerized marine battery system at the SMM 2026 event. This system aims to lower costs and engineering complexity by removing the requirement for dedicated battery rooms, potentially accelerating adoption for ferries, tugboats, and other commercial vessels.
