Royal Caribbean passenger rescued after 20-hour ordeal in Ionian Sea

A 44-year-old Salvadoran woman has been rescued after spending approximately 20 hours in the Ionian Sea. The passenger went overboard from Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas on Friday, October 9, while the vessel was sailing southwest of the Greek island of Zakynthos.

A large-scale search and rescue operation was launched, involving the Hellenic Coast Guard, a military helicopter, and several vessels. The woman was eventually located in the early hours of Saturday by the crew of the cargo ship MSC Rossella III, who spotted a flashing light on the lifebuoy she was using to stay afloat.

Following her rescue, the woman was transported to the port of Katakolo and subsequently to a hospital in Pyrgos for medical examination. According to reports from the Hellenic Coast Guard, the woman stated she jumped from the ship because she “wanted to disembark.” A local prosecutor has ordered a psychiatric evaluation as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident.
