Cruise ship passenger overboard incident in Greece

Overview

A 44-year-old woman from El Salvador was rescued after spending nearly 20 hours in the Ionian Sea. The incident occurred on October 9, 2026, when the woman went overboard from the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Odyssey of the Seas while traveling from Mykonos toward Naples.

A search and rescue operation was launched by Greek authorities, involving the Hellenic Coast Guard, a Greek Air Force helicopter, and various vessels. The woman was located in the early hours of October 10, approximately 70 nautical miles southwest of Zakynthos, after the crew of the cargo ship ‘MSC ROSSELLA III’ spotted the flashing light on her lifebelt.

Rescuers recovered the woman, who was conscious, and transported her to the port of Katakolo. She was subsequently taken to a hospital in Pyrgos for treatment of hypothermia.

New details indicate the woman reportedly jumped from the ship on the morning of October 9. Upon being rescued, she told responders that she jumped because she “wanted to disembark.” As part of the ongoing investigation into the circumstances of the incident, a local prosecutor has ordered a psychiatric evaluation for the woman.
