Reform UK receives £72m in record donations from crypto billionaires

Reform UK has received a combined £72 million in donations from two cryptocurrency-linked billionaires, Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne, marking the largest political donations in British history. Each donor contributed £36 million within a 24-hour period. Nigel Farage stated the funds are intended to prepare the party for government in the next election, specifically to build research and policy departments.

The massive influx of cash has reignited intense political debate regarding campaign finance in the UK. Angela Rayner suggested that the government could impose a cap on political donations to prevent wealthy individuals from “buying their way into democracy.” Furthermore, there are discussions regarding the Representation of the People Bill, which includes retrospective rules on overseas donations. Because Harborne is based in Thailand, there is a possibility that Reform UK could be required to return some of the funds if they do not comply with new limits on overseas contributions dating back to March 25.

While Reform UK maintains the donations are entirely legal and that neither donor expects favors such as peerages or government contracts, critics and opposition members have raised concerns about the influence of the cryptocurrency sector on British politics and the potential for undermining democratic trust.
