Cryptocurrency market faces sharp pullback and $1.7 billion in liquidations
The cryptocurrency market has experienced a significant downturn, characterized by a sharp pullback in Bitcoin and widespread liquidations across major digital assets. The total market capitalization declined from approximately $2.68 trillion to $2.61 trillion, driven largely by profit-taking following a recent rally.
In a major liquidation event, over $1.7 billion in crypto positions were wiped out within a 24-hour period, marking one of the largest such events in history. The volatility heavily impacted long positions, with Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP seeing substantial price drops. XRP experienced a notable 12% decline, while Ethereum also faced heavy selling pressure.
Altcoins significantly underperformed, with the TOTAL3 market cap falling sharply as capital rotated away from higher-risk investments. Despite the volatility and a rise in speculative leverage that increased liquidation risks, institutional interest remains visible through stable exchange-traded fund (ETF) assets under management, which stand at approximately $86.1 billion.
