Crypto market volatility and divergent asset trends
Overview
Cryptocurrency markets continue to exhibit significant volatility and divergent trends among major assets. While Bitcoin has faced substantial declines from its 2025 peak, institutional interest remains visible through significant ETF inflows. By August 10, 2026, Ethereum has demonstrated a notable divergence between network activity and market liquidity. Staking has reached record levels, with approximately 42 million ETH—more than one-third of the circulating supply—locked in staking protocols. Despite US spot Ethereum ETFs recording weekly inflows of $245 million, ETH price action has remained constrained, facing resistance near $1,940.
By August 17, 2026, Ethereum has remained relatively stagnant, trading near $1,878. Although developer teams have successfully increased network capacity by raising the gas limit per block from 30 to 45 million, the price has shown minimal movement.
XRP is experiencing a contrasting landscape. While weekly ETF inflows dropped significantly, on-chain data indicated aggressive accumulation by large whale wallets. However, by mid-August, XRP showed signs of instability as its price dipped below the $1.00 mark, trading around $0.99. Analysts note growing selling pressure and new bearish positions despite whale holdings rising to over 12 billion XRP.
Cardano (ADA) has fallen to approximately $0.18, marking a year-to-date decline of over 70 percent, following Grayscale’s decision to withdraw its spot ETF applications for Cardano, Polkadot, and Hedera. While this withdrawal was not a formal SEC rejection, it coincided with Cardano meeting a six-month futures deadline. Other providers, including Bitwise, VanEck, and 21Shares, maintain active applications with an SEC decision window expected around October 23.
