Cryptocurrency trading volumes surge as Bitcoin rallies
The cryptocurrency market has seen a significant rebound, driven largely by a surge in Bitcoin's price. In August, Bitcoin increased by nearly 22% since mid-August, fueling a 19% month-over-month jump in total spot trading volume across 14 major centralized exchanges, which reached $510.4 billion.
Binance maintained its market leadership, reporting spot trading volumes between $227 billion and $243 billion for the month. While Binance commands approximately 45-46% of the volume among the 14 tracked exchanges, its share of the broader centralized exchange market is estimated at around 28%.
Despite the market rally, Bitcoin miners have largely underperformed compared to exchanges and stablecoin-linked firms. While Bitcoin gained 22%, the average miner captured only 8.2% of that upside, delivering a median profit of 1.8%. Canaan was noted as the only major mining company to outperform Bitcoin. Companies transitioning toward high-performance computing (HPC) and AI, such as Core Scientific and TeraWulf, have seen their valuations shift as they project HPC to contribute the majority of their revenues by 2026.
