CSIC inaugurates major quantum nanofabrication facility in Barcelona

The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) has inaugurated a new quantum nanofabrication zone at the cleanroom of the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM). This facility is considered the largest research infrastructure of its kind in Spain.

Supported by an investment exceeding 6 million euros, the project was funded through the PERTE Chip and the complementary quantum communications plan, utilizing Next Generation EU funds. The facility features advanced equipment, including Spain’s most sophisticated electron beam lithography system, alongside high-precision microscopes and metrology tools for inspecting nanometric structures.

The infrastructure is designed to support researchers and companies in the design, fabrication, and prototyping of technologies for quantum computing, communications, health, energy, and security. This initiative aims to strengthen Spain’s semiconductor and quantum technology capabilities while facilitating the transition from research to industrial development. Additionally, the CSIC announced the creation of the QuARC-CSIC (Quantum Advanced Research Centre) to consolidate quantum talent and research.
