CSL appoints new CEO following significant market value decline
Melbourne-based biotechnology giant CSL is undergoing a leadership transition following a period of financial volatility. The company has appointed Deborah Waterhouse, a former GSK executive and former leader of ViiV Healthcare, as its first female chief executive. Waterhouse is scheduled to begin her role in February.
The management shake-up follows a difficult 2025/26 financial year in which CSL reported a statutory net loss of US$2.6 billion. This loss was largely attributed to writedowns in its Vifor kidney treatment and iron deficiency businesses, which have faced challenges from regulatory shifts and generic competition.
Investor confidence has been impacted by these earnings, contributing to a significant decline in market value. CSL's share price fell from approximately $310 in July 2024 to a nine-year low of around $90 in June this year. Despite these challenges, analysts remain divided on the company's future trajectory, with price targets ranging from a potential 23% decline to a 10% rise over the next year.
