CSL leadership transition and financial performance

Overview

CSL Limited has announced the appointment of Deborah Waterhouse as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, effective February 1, 2027. Waterhouse, who currently serves as CEO of ViiV Healthcare and President of GSK Global Health, is the company’s first female chief executive.

The leadership change follows a period of significant financial volatility and a decline in market value. During the 2025/26 financial year, CSL reported a statutory net loss of US$2.6 billion, primarily due to writedowns in its Vifor kidney treatment and iron deficiency businesses. These divisions have faced difficulties stemming from regulatory shifts and generic competition.

As a result of these earnings, the company’s share price dropped from approximately $310 in July 2024 to a nine-year low of roughly $90 in June 2026. CSL Chair Dr. Brian McNamee noted that the board’s decision to appoint Waterhouse was based on her capacity to “grow complex businesses, renew pipelines, and manage international partnerships.”
