CSU jurists demand judicial reform due to AI advancements

Jurists within the CSU are calling for a comprehensive reform of the judiciary to address the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence. Winfried Bausback, head of the CSU's legal working group, stated that the judiciary and administration must utilize AI opportunities to remain competitive and keep pace with other procedural participants.

Legal professionals warn that courts are increasingly being overwhelmed by AI-generated legal briefs. Attorney Holger Weimann noted that even simple civil cases are seeing documents spanning hundreds of pages, which threatens to degrade the quality of legal work and overburden the system. To counter this, the group is demanding the implementation of AI assistance systems for the judiciary, the creation of new legal frameworks for AI use, and mechanisms to limit the influx of abusive, AI-generated filings.

While legal scholars and officials emphasize the need for faster digital adaptation, Bettina Mielke, President of the Ingolstadt Regional Court, noted that constitutional requirements prevent human judicial decisions from being replaced by AI.
