CSU's Christian Weber proposes stripping AfD politicians of passive suffrage

Christian Weber, Vice President of the CSU and leader of the European People's Party (EPP) group, has proposed stripping politicians from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party of their passive suffrage rights.

Speaking in the 'Passauer Neue Presse', Weber suggested moving beyond a 'theoretical firewall' to actively isolate the party. While he rejected a formal ban on the AfD, his proposal involves preventing AfD candidates from being admitted to elections, a move modeled after practices in Lower Saxony.

Martin Böhm, the AfD parliamentary group spokesperson in the Bavarian Landtag, criticized the proposal as an 'attack on our fundamental rights' and an attempt to cement the power of established parties through non-democratic means.
